Sleepwalking is a family drama about Tara (AnnaSophia Robb), a 12-year-old girl who copes with the abandonment of her mother. Tara's mother, Joleen (Charlize Theron), can't seem to get her life together. Joleen's boyfriend has recently been arrested for illegally growing marijuana, and instead of focusing on creating a stable living environment for her daughter, Joleen places Tara in foster care. Joleen's brother James (Nick Stahl), who isn't quite stable mentally, feels sympathetic toward his niece and decides to kidnap Tara from the foster care home.
