Sideways is a 2004 romantic comedy by director Alexander Payne, based on Rex’s 2004 novel. Sideways is about two forty-something year old men, Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti) and Jack Cole (Thomas Haden Church), who take a week-long road trip to the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. Miles is a divorcee, unpublished author, wine afficianado, and middle school English teacher. Jack is Miles’ old college roommate, a now soon-to-be-married actor. Miles wants to indulge in wine and fine food, as well as play some nice, relaxed golf, but Jack is more interested in finding one last fling.
