Red River is a 1948 Western film about the historic first cattle drive from Texas to Kansas. Directed by Howard Hawks, Red River recounts the conflict between Thomas Dunson (John Wayne), a cantankerous cattle rancher, and his adopted son Matthew Garth (Montgomery Clift). Before Dunson became a successful cattle rancher, he set out to found a cattle ranch in Texas. After a Native American tribe attacks and destroys a wagon train, Dunson finds the young Matthew hiding among the rubble. Fourteen years later, Dunson is a big time cattle rancher with thousands of cattle but no one to sell them to.
