Rebel Without a Cause: Special Edition is the special edition of a dramatic film directed by Nicholas Ray and written by Irving Shulman and Stewart Stern from Nicholas Ray's story. The film centers around Jim Stark (James Dean), a teenager who has recently moved to Los Angeles and is disillusioned with his family. His parents are often fighting, and his father, Frank (Jim Backus) rarely stands up for himself in front of his wife (Anne Doran). Jim yearns for a more stable family, and a father who knows how to be a man. He acts out, and is arrested for public drunkenness. His parents can't understand where Jim is coming from, and fail to see his call for help. Soon after, Jim meets and befriends Plato (Sal Mineo) and Judy (Natalie Wood), who both understand Jim's frustrations with feeling like an outcast. When confronted by the school bully, Buzz Gunderson (Corey Allen), Jim agrees to play a racing game to see who is chicken, which leads to tragedy. Jim tries to explain what he's going through to his parents, but he is frustrated by their inability to listen to what he's saying. Jim, Judy, and Plato hide out in an abandoned house, and the three form the family they all wish they could have. Will the teenagers' parents finally be able to listen to their children, or will the generation gap prove to be too much? Rebel Without a Cause was released in 1955, and has since proved to be one of the most classic films of all time. MORE [EDIT]
