Quilombo is one of the few Brazilian movies to have been successfully entered into the Cannes film festival. Covering a part of Brazilian history that seems at odds with the contention that Brazil alone among South American nations did not have a protracted problem with racism, the movie is a dramatization of the brief history of the republic known as Quilombo de Palmares. During the 17th century, slaves that escaped from plantation work near the coasts, were able to hide in the unsettled interior of the South American continent. There they eventually formed communities and cities. Quilombo de Palmares was the best known.
