Pinero is a 2001 biographical film about the notable American writer Miguel Pinero. Raised by abusive parents in a rough neighborhood, Miguel Pinero (Benjamin Bratt) becomes involved in crime early in life. When he ultimately ends up in Sing-Sing prison years later, Pinero decides to start writing about his life. The result is the play Short Eyes, which goes on to receive seven Tony nominations during 1974. Though now a celebrity, Pinero struggles with the attention he receives from an adoring public. He finds refuge from the spotlight with his girlfriend, Sugar (Talisa Soto), and his best friend, Miguel Algarin (Giancarlo Esposito).
