One in 2000 is a short 2006 documentary that explores the rarely discussed condition of intersex, or hermaphrodite. Approximately one out of 2000 babies are born each year without distinctly male or female anatomy. When parents ponder what type of child to expect, rarely do they expect an intersex child. This film aims to educate parents, the medical community and the public at large about the existence of this gender ambiguity. The most common resolution is "gender reassignment" surgery, which five infants undergo every day in the United States in spite of there being little documented evidence that the child benefits. Interviews with intersex individuals give voice to the range of outcomes for their androgyny and describe their own paths to finding a happy and healthy outcome to not easily fitting into society's ideas of gender. Their personal experiences are contrasted with clips from medical films made in the 1950s and a young mother looking for the best choices for her intersex child.MORE[EDIT]
