Mr. Lucky was released in 1943 and directed by H.C. Potter. Joe Adams (Cary Grant) is a gambler and part owner of Fortuna, an illegal gambling ship. The Fortuna is ready to sail to Havana when Joe Adams gets a draft notice. Always thinking ahead, and only of himself, Adams takes on the identity of a dead man, Joe Bascopolous so he can escape the draft. He crafts a plan to help raise money for the War Relief Fund by holding a casino night, and then stealing all the money for himself. Two things happen that Joe Adams didn't count on. First, he meets the kind hearted socialite, Dorothy Bryant (Laraine Day) who teaches him how to knit, steals his heart and causes him to reevaluate his plans.
