The Mission is a 1986 historical epic about 18th century South America, starring Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons. The film explores the conflicting European forces in the region after the Treaty of Madrid in 1750, in which Spain ceded a portion of South America to Portugal. Portuguese slave trader Mendoza (Robert De Niro) comes to the continent to gather bodies and riches for his own enrichment, whereas Jesuit priest, Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) has built a mission to gather souls for the Catholic Church. Gabriel envisions a new world where the Portuguese, Spanish, and Indians can live together in a harmonious new society.
