The Mission

The Mission is a 1986 historical epic about 18th century South America, starring Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons. The film explores the conflicting European forces in the region after the Treaty of Madrid in 1750, in which Spain ceded a portion of South America to Portugal. Portuguese slave trader Mendoza (Robert De Niro) comes to the continent to gather bodies and riches for his own enrichment, whereas Jesuit priest, Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) has built a mission to gather souls for the Catholic Church. Gabriel envisions a new world where the Portuguese, Spanish, and Indians can live together in a harmonious new society. The two different approaches to conquest converge when Mendoza comes to the church seeking penance after his anger results in a tragic death. Director Roland Joffe won the Best Picture Award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for this thoughtful film that explores the both the politics and human lives of the era. MORE [EDIT]
