Matador

The Matador is a 2005 dark comedy written and directed by Richard Shepard. When burnt-out hitman, Julian Noble (Pierce Brosnan), meets businessman Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) in a bar in Mexico City, the two form an unlikely friendship based on tequila and a rare form of brutal honesty only possible between complete strangers. In the depths of a mid-life crisis, Julian freezes on the job, unable to eliminate his next victim. When he shares this information with Danny, Danny is incredulous. The next day, the two meet at the bullfight. Julian takes Danny through a "practice hit" without actually killing the intended victim. Shocked at how easily the event came together, Danny is extremely apprehensive when Julian shows up at his door later that night. As the scene fades to black, we are left to wonder what happened next. The film picks-up again at Christmas time. Danny and his wife, Carolyn "Bean" Wright (Hope Davis) are relaxing in front of the fireplace when Julian appears out of nowhere. Julian needs Danny's help for one more hit. As the film moves towards its final conclusion, we see Danny balanced on the edge of a moral divide between friendship and murder. Fans of quirky dark comedy will be mesmerized by the performance of Pierce Brosnan as the loveable yet amoral hitman Julian Noble in The Matador. MORE [EDIT]
