Manoushe was produced by Brazilian director Luiz Begazo and released in 1992. When the patriarchal leader (Breno Moroni) of a gypsy caravan dies, his clan gathers around to mourn him. As the burial rituals unfold, his wife (Drica Moraes) regales those in attendance with stories of their youth. Her tale begins with their run away courtship. The couple eloped because of her parents' disapproval. When her father finds out about their tryst he chases them into the dark woods. Their hiding place proves to be an enchanted forest full of helpful gnomes and dangerous goblins.
