Malek is a 1989 drama about Canadian deliquent-turned journalist Victor Malarek. Malarek (Elias Koteas) is a street-smart former juvenile offender with a troubled past under Quebec's child protection system. He takes an opportunity to turn his life around and is given a job as reporter for the Montreal Star. When he witnesses the shooting death of a street kid at the hands of a cruel police officer, he is violently reminded of the plights of his youth and dedicates himself to exposing the corruption in Canada's social welfare system. He picks the right place to start: the city's teenaged detention center and its pattern of suspicious deaths.
