Male and Female

Male and Female is a 1919 silent film about class conflict and a battle of the sexes. Crichton (Thomas Leighton) is the resourceful and stoic butler for an upper-crust English family, the Loams. Secretly, Crichton is poetry lover and in love with Mary (Gloria Swanson), the spoiled eldest daughter of the family. Mary is so pampered she orders the servants to prepare her bath at an exact temperature. One day, during a yachting trip, the family and servants are shipwrecked on a deserted island. Soon, because of his superior survival skills, Crichton becomes the undisputed leader of the seven castaways, upending the social hierarchy. Before long, Mary and the chambermaid are fighting over who gets to serve the master, Crichton, as the rest of the formerly proud family looks on helplessly. Male and Female is directed by Cecil B.
