Magnificent Obsession

Magnificent Obsession is a 1954 melodrama directed by Douglas Sirk and written by Robert Rees and Wells Root. It is based on the book of the same title by Lloyd C. Douglas. When errant playboy Robert Merrick (Rock Hudson) crashes his speedboat and comes close to drowning, the nearest resuscitation equipment is in the house of Dr. Phillips. When Phillips has a heart attack and dies without his equipment there to save him, leaving Helen (Jane Wyman), his young wife widowed, the town blames Merrick. Phillips was a much loved man, who had given away most of his money as loans to the townspeople and refused to allow them to pay him back. After leaving the hospital, Merrick tries to return to his old life, but is plagued by feelings of guilt. He meets Edward Randolph (Otto Kruger), a wise doctor, who tries to guide Merrick to a sense of duty. Merrick tries to make amends to Helen, but she steps in front of his car and is blinded. Merrick decides to devote his life to becoming a doctor and to fulfilling the legacy of Dr. Phillip, caring for the now sightless Helen in the guise of a poor medical student. MORE [EDIT]
