Madame Sata is a 2002 Franco-Brazilian film directed by Karim Ainouz that tells the true life story of Joao Francisco dos Santos, a notorious gay performer better known as Madame Sata. Born in 1900, Joao lived in Rio de Janeiro's Lapa district, a bohemian enclave known for artists and the sexually liberal. Joao achieves his dream of being a star on the stage by working the streets as a prostitute during the day and bouncing from one club to the next at night. Joao becomes a "street mother" to fellow outcasts, including another prostitute, her daughter, a hustler, a nightclub owner, and Sata's lover Renatinho. Joao's gets caught in the petty crime of the Lapa underworld, and eventually finds himself in in jail for the charge MORE [EDIT]
