Losing Isaiah

Losing Isaiah is a 1995 drama starring Jessica Lange, Halley Berry, and David Strathairn. The movie is based on a book by Seth Margolis and was adapted to screen by Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal. Stephen Gyllenhaal (Paris Trout, A Dangerous Woman, Twin Peaks) directs. The movie poses several ethical questions surrounding adoption and 'what makes a mother?' - the movie's tagline. Khaila Richards (Halley Berry) is a crack cocaine-addicted black woman who gives birth to a boy in the middle of an alley way. Unable to provide for her baby, and desperate to get high, Richards leaves her newly-born baby in a cardboard box by the side of the road. Luckily, he is found and rescued by social workers the following morning during trash collection. He is placed in the care of Margaret Lewin (Jessica Lange), a white social worker from a local hospital, who names the boy Isaiah and cures him of his addiction to crack. Margaret raises the boy as though he was her own. Years later, Richards, now cleaned-up, arrives at her doorstep wishing to reclaim her son.
