Live and Become, or Va, Vis et Deviens is an inspirational story of an Ethiopian boy who leaves his impoverished conditions behind for a better life in Israel. The film is directed by Radu-Mihaileanu, who is Romanian, although French is spoken throughout the film. At a young age, Shlomo (Moshe Agazai/Moshe Abebe/Sirak M. Sabahat) is adopted by a Jewish Ethiopian woman who recently lost a child of her own. His biological mother gave him to this woman knowing that she would embark on a helicopter to be taken to Israel, where they can live under much better conditions. As Shlomo's biological mother bids him adieu she cries "Go, live, and become." Much of the movie surrounds Shlomo in his youth and later his adult life as he struggles to cope with a false sense of identity he lives with, for he is not really Jewish, nor is his Jewish mother his real mother. The film received a lot of attention at the Vancouver International Film Festival where it won Most Popular International Film in 2005. Be sure to catch LIve and Become!MORE[EDIT]
