Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a 2005 dark comedy thriller starring Robert Downey, Jr, Val Kilmer, and Michelle Monaghan. The film is directed by Shane Black and uses many conventions of a classic film noir genre. Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr) is a small time thief who is mistaken for an actor while fleeing a botched robbery. Harry stumbles into an unlikely audition and receives a starring role in the movie being produced. After being cast as the detective in the movie, Harry is taken to Los Angeles where he receives acting lessons from Private Detective Gay Perry ( Val Kilmer) who he meets at a party.
