In & Out

In & Out is a 1997 comedy directed by Frank Oz. Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline) lives a simple, contented life, far away from anything approaching a spotlight. He is an affable high school English teacher in a quaint, sleepy town in Indiana. Howard has even found romance at his workplace and will soon marry fellow teacher Emily Montgomery (Joan Cusack). Lately, the town is enjoying a rare moment at the center of national attention. One of their own, Cameron Drake (Matt Dillon), has become a successful actor and has been nominated for an Oscar. Howard, Emily and everybody else in Greenleaf watch with pride as Cameron wins the award and delivers a heartfelt speech. Howard is thrilled to hear Cameron personally thank him, but the bottom drops out of his world when Cameron claims that Howard is gay. The whole town explodes with gossip, and shell-shocked Howard finds himself trying to deal with family, friends, neighbors and even the national media. To make matters worse, Cameron's words have triggered a deeply hidden doubt in Howard's own mind. With his wedding approaching, the high school teacher will have to do some serious soul-searching.
