How Green Was My Valley, a 1941 film directed by John Ford, follows a Welsh clan as they navigate political and social upheavals at the beginning of the twentieth century. Huw Morgan (Roddy McDowall), now a grown man, narrates the story of his youth in a coal mining town in South Wales. Huw's father, Gwilym Morgan (Donald Crisp), has worked in the mines for years. While his family is not rich, they are satisfied with their humble way of life. The Morgans' happiness is threatened when Mr. Morgan decides not to join a strike organized by the new coal miners' union.
