Hoosiers is the 1986 sports film about a small-town Indiana basketball team in their pursuit to win the state championship. Set in 1952, the film is loosely based on the Milan High School basketball team that won the 1954 state championship. Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) is the high school's new coach who is attempting to escape his troubled past. After losing his temper and getting ejected from a couple of games, Norman fails to impress many of the local people. He hires the father of one of his players as an assistant coach. When the townspeople vote Dale out as coach, Chitwood (the school's most promising talent who has not yet decided to play) tells the town that he will only play if Dale is kept as coach.
