Home Town Story follows defeated state politician Blake Washburn (Jeffrey Lynn) as he seeks revenge on manufacturer John MacFarland (Donald Crisp), who he blames for his defeat in his re-election bid for the state legislature. He decides to take a job as editor of the Fairfax Herald, his uncle Cliff's (Griff Barnett) newspaper, where he will work to expose the corruption of corporations and big business. Iris Martin (Marilyn Monroe) is the attractive secretary working at the newspaper office along with Blake's old college pal Slim Haskins (Alan Hale Jr.). Blake writes scathing editorials against corporate greed that grows circulation and brings encouragements to once again seek public office, but his new views cause trouble with the staff and his girlfriend, Janice Hunt (Marjorie Reynolds). Blake is forced to reconsider his views of big business when tragedy strikes his family and the corporate barons he has been berating in his paper come to the family's aid.
