High Crimes

High Crimes is a 2002 suspense thriller directed by Carl Franklin and starring Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, and James Caviezel. Claire Kubik (Ashley Judd), an attorney, and her husband Tom (James Caviezel), a woodworker, live a quiet and happy life in Marin County, California. Their lives are changed forever when, during a Christmas shopping spree in San Francisco, Tom is detained by the FBI, and charged with the high crime of murder. To Claire's utter shock and amazement, her husband Tom, whose real name is revealed to be Ronald Chapman, was formerly a secret military operative for the United States Marines. Tom has been on the run for fourteen years, and has been accused of murdering nine peasants in a remote El Salvadorian village in 1988. Tom admits to Claire that he was at the scene of the mass murders, but swears that he is innocent and that the real murderer is Major James Hernandez (Juan Carlos Hernández), who is now the aide of Brigadier General Bill Marks (Bruce Davison). With the help of Charlie Grimes (Morgan Freeman), a former military attorney, Claire risks everything to prove her husband's innocence, and discovers shocking secrets that reveal nothing is as it seems.
