Her Name Is Sabine is the result of a 25-year intimate and deeply personal film project by French actress Sandine Bonnaire. Sandine's sister, Sabine, lives with autism. Footage from their childhoods show Sabine as a healthy and active girl. But improper diagnosis and an inadequate health care system in France has changed Sabine forever. A five-year stay in a psychiatric hospital has created new problems for her. She has declined physically and mentally and ultimately her growth and natural talents have been devastated. One in every 110 children lives with autism today, and the incidence is rising without explanation. Early diagnosis is critical to effective treatment. The signs of autism in children are difficult to detect because parents and healthcare providers must identify the absence of normal behavior versus the presence of abnormal behavior.
