1984

In 1984, the world was graced with the horror-comedy, Gremlins. Directed by Joe Dante, and written by Chris Columbus, this movie swiftly became a classic and paved the way for future horror-comedy movies. Gremlins stars the likes of Zach Galligan (Billy Peltzer), Phoebe Cates (Kate Beringer), and Hoyt Axton (Randall Peltzer). The movie’s plot revolves around a young man, Billy Peltzer, who is given an adorable creature called Gizmo as a Christmas present by his father. However, Gizmo comes with a set of rules that must be followed; do not get the creature wet, do not expose it to bright light, and never feed it after midnight. Billy is irresponsible at times and ends up letting Gizmo get wet, which in turn causes him to spawn large amounts of mischievous gremlins. What started as a harmless and beloved pet turns into a terrifying series of events when the small town in which Billy and Gizmo reside becomes overrun by evil gremlins. The gremlins are malevolent creatures that terrorize the townspeople in various ways, causing chaos and destruction wherever they go. The special effects used to bring the gremlins to life are incredibly impressive for their time. The animatronics used allow for the gremlins to have a range of facial expressions, making them seem almost lifelike. The use of puppets instead of CGI means that the audience is able to see and believe that the creatures are real, making the movie more tense and terrifying. Hoyt Axton’s character, Randall Peltzer, is one of the more memorable characters in the movie. His character is a struggling inventor who hopes to sell his latest invention to make enough money for Christmas. His role is one of the more grounding and comedic roles in the film, and he adds a lot of lightness to the movie. Phoebe Cates’ role as Kate Beringer, Billy’s love interest, is also a notable performance. Kate’s character is level-headed, responsible, and strong-willed. She works at the town’s local bar and serves as a waitress. Her role in the movie increases in importance as she helps Billy fight and ultimately defeat the gremlins. Towards the end of the movie, there is a distinct shift in tone. The comedy is dialed down as the horror element takes center stage. The last portion of the movie has a much darker feel and will keep the audience at the edge of their seats. The movie never forgets its horror roots, and it culminates in a thrilling climax that will keep the audience guessing until the very end. In conclusion, Gremlins is an excellent horror-comedy movie that has withstood the test of time. It’s a testament to the creativity of Chris Columbus and the skill of the filmmakers that the movie is equally funny and terrifying. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s definitely worth a watch- but beware of the possible nightmares that may come afterwards.
