Goodbye Lover

Goodbye Lover is a twisted, comic film noir from 1999 featuring an all-star cast, bizarre plot twists and the songs from "The Sound of Music." The femme fatale is Sandra Dunmore (Patricia Arquette), the wife of a Los Angeles real estate agent and raging alcoholic named Jake (Dermot Mulroney). Sandra is having an affair with Jake's brother, Ben Dunsmore (Don Johnson), and hints to Ben that she would like to see something terrible happen to Jake. Ben is only interested in Sandra for sex, and finds her obsession with the movie "The Sound of Music" bizarre, so he flatly rejects Sandra's suggestion that he murder Jake. Looking for something more meaningful, he starts dating the more prim and proper Peggy Blaine (Mary-Louise Parker), provoking Sandra to get revenge by telling Jake about the affair. This sets in motion a string of violent events, double-crosses and triple-crosses which brings in a off-kilter police officer, Detective Rita Pompano (Ellen DeGeneres), to investigate the crimes. When asked by one of the characters why she became a police officer, the detective answers bluntly, because "every once in while, I get to shoot someone."
