Gloomy Sunday

Gloomy Sunday is set in Budapest during World War II. Laszlo (Joachi Krol) hires a new pianist, Andras (Stefano Dionisi), for his Restaurant Szabo eatery. However, he may well regret this decision as Andras becomes a romantic rival for beautiful waitress Ilona (Erika Marozsan). As conflict builds and their fragile love triangle becomes more and more volatile, Andras is inspired to write the song Gloomy Sunday. This dark melody drives some of those who listen to it to suicide. On top of that, a German industrialist, Hans Wieck (Ben Becker) also develops an interest in Ilona. He attempts suicide after she turns him down, but Laszlo saves his life. When he returns several years later, it is with the Nazi occupation, as a ranking member of the party. What does he do about the fact that Laszlo is a Jew? The movie mixes history and fiction (Gloomy Sunday is a real song, although it was not written by a man named Andras). MORE [EDIT]
