Gene Autry Collection: The Strawberry Roan is Autry's first color picture. This movie is based on a boy named Joe (Dickie Jones) who was paralyzed after being thrown off a bucking horse, Champ, the Strawberry Roan (Champion). Joe's father, Walt (Jack Holt) was upset by this tragic accident and tries to shoot the horse. He is stopped by the ranch hand, Gene Autry (himself). Relationships are broken. The horse escapes and Autry is told to leave the ranch. Autry finds and trains the roan. The doctors caring for Joe are optimistic that he will soon walk again but he has fallen in a dark state of depression.
