From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China documents a goodwill tour Isaac Stern made of China in 1979. Filmmaker Murray Lerner accompanied him throughout the tour, and the movie covers many aspects, including recollections of the harsh reality of 1960s China from Tan Shuzhen, the director of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Stern also spends time coaching gifted students, meeting with users of traditional instruments and visiting a sports academy. The documentary shows the meeting of east and west and how Stern was able to form a bridge between the two.
