Five Branded Women

Five Branded Women is a 1960 war drama directed by Martin Ritt. In 1943 German-occupied Yugoslavia, Sgt. Paul Keller (Steve Forrest) brags to his friends about his four local "conquests" with young women. After he has sex with a fifth, Jovanka (Silvana Mangano), he is attacked by Yugoslavian rebels, known as Partisans. Jovanaka escapes, but is quickly caught by the Partisans, who shave her head, a public mark of shame, for associating with the enemy. The other four women, Ljuba (Jeanna Moreau), Danziza (Vera Miles), Marja (Barbara Bel Geddes), and Mira (Carla Gravina) all receive the same treatment. The five women are rounded up by Germans and after refusing to identify the Partisan guerillas, are expelled from the city. Despite the fact that they barely know each other, the five women must band together to survive outside the city, in spite of their shaved heads, which immediately identify them as shamed women.
