Fanny

Fanny is set in Marseille, where Marius (Horst Buchholz) feels trapped in a life planned out for him by his cafe-owning father (Charles Boyer). He longs, rather, to go to sea, but even that choice is not made simple. Marius is in love with Fanny (Leslie Caron) and also desires to settle down and marry her. The night before he leaves on a five-year voyage, he spends with Fanny. He offers to stay with her, but she tells him she would rather marry her wealthy suitor Panisse (Maurice Chevalier). Marius leaves on his voyage, leaving Fanny pregnant with his child, a child Panisse is quite willing to acknowledge as his own. The movie was based off of the Broadway musical of the same name, but all of the songs were removed. Many instrumental passages, however, were left in, including the main theme.
