Fairytale: A True Story

Fairytale: A True Story is a fictionalized account of the events surrounding the famous "Cottingley fairies" pictures taken by two young English girls during 1917 and the events of World War I. The sensational images captured by the two girls show them playing with numerous fantastical fairy creatures, and propelled them into national fame. The photos also attracted the attention of famous figures Arthur Conan Doyle (Peter O'Toole) and Harry Houdini (Harvey Keitel), who sought to uncover the truth behind the fantastic images. While the pictures were later admitted as a hoax perpetrated by the girls, the movie presents an alternative explanation exploring the nature of faith and belief in the face of skepticism and empirical evidence. This movie presents thematically the idea that objective truth may be, in fact, less relevant than the need to believe, and even the debunkers and naysayers of the age were forced to proclaim the images authentic. A touching and philosophical exploration of the interaction of fantasy and reality and why people strive so hard to believe in the impossible, despite all evidence to the contrary. MORE [EDIT]
