Exorcist: The Beginning is a 2004 American horror film directed by Renny Harlin and starring Stellan Skarsgard, Izabella Scorupco, and James D'Arcy. The film tells the story of Father Merrin (Skarsgard), played by Max von Sydow in the three previous Exorcist films. As a prequel, the story concerns the young Merrin in his missionary work in Africa. Haunted by the acts he was forced to commit during World War II in his native Holland, Merrin has given up on his faith. In Africa, however, Merrin discovers the remnants of an ancient religion. In his quest for further knowledge about the mysterious religion, he discovers that the camp in which he is staying is in turmoil, as local boy has been behaving strangely.
