Elegy is a drama about a cultural critic whose mundane life is thrown into chaos by one of his students. David Kepsesh (Ben Kingsley) is a professor and a cultural critic whose life is in "emancipated manhood." All of his relationships with women are merely sexual in nature, and he can never maintain anything meaningful. Consuela Castillo (Pen''lope Cruz) is a student who attends one of David's lectures. She immediately captures his attention, and they begin a serious relationship. Consuela invites David to her graduation party, but he is hasty to promise that he'll come.
