Committee on UnAmerican Activities

Committee on UnAmerican Activities is a compilation of historical footage relating to the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), a committee of the United States House of Representatives formed in 1938. HUAC functioned as an investigative arm of the House, probing deeply into the lives of hundreds of citizens and residents of the United States concerning a variety of activities considered subversive or otherwise dangerous to the security of the country. The film links a questioning narration with audio and video of testimony of dozens of individuals brought before the Committee, along with media reports, interviews and speeches of the people observing or involved in the actual activities of the HUAC. The narration varies among recitation of facts, restating of contemporary reports, accusations of evidence tampering and questioning of the purpose, conduct and effect of the HUAC. Issues reexamined through the lens of this film start with the labor movement inquiries of the 1930s and continue through the Hollywood Blacklists of 1947 and 1951 and the Cold War-linked communist "witch hunts" of the 1950s. A number of other events tied to HUAC are presented, including efforts to falsify attempts by critics of the Committee to expose its workings. A long list of national figures who opposed the methods of HUAC is reviewed through the footage. Robert Carl Cohen made the 2005 film, and claims to have been investigated by the latest incarnation of HUAC for his pains. MORE [EDIT]
