Celebrity is a dark comedy about how the temptations of fame can ruin people's lives. The film opens with the separation of Lee Simon (Kenneth Branagh) and his wife, Robin (Judy Davis). A failed novelist and frustrated travel writer, Lee deals with his upcoming divorce and subsequent mid-life crisis by immersing himself in celebrity journalism. He quickly becomes involved with his book editor, Bonnie (Famke Janssen), but is hardly faithful to her. He flirts with aging actress Nicole Oliver (Melanie Griffith), completely falls for a nubile supermodel (Charlize Theron) and even has an affair with a young waitress named Nola (Winona Ryder).
