Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson is a comic 1976 Western starring Paul Newman as the Wild West legend. After the West was won, William "Buffalo Bill" Cody (Paul Newman) traded Indian hunting for show business with a spectacular touring show. He presents stunts, legends like Annie Oakley (Geraldine Chaplin), and reenactments of famous moments in history. Always on the lookout for new and profitable acts, Cody invites Chief Sitting Bull (Frank Kaquitts), who famously defeated Custer, to join the show, but as a representative of his defeated people. The silent Chief agrees through his assistant, William Halsey (William Sampson), but insists on changing Cody's script to accurately reflect history and not mythologize the past. Their conflict plays out against a backdrop of colorful characters including Ned Buntline (Burt Lancaster), President Grover Cleveland (Pat McCormick) and his First Lady (Shelley Duvall).
