Black Hawk Down is the 2001 Academy Award-winning war drama depicting the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3, 1993. Delta Force Soldiers, Army Rangers and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment conducted a military operation to capture two senior subordinates of Warlord Mohamed Farah Aidid in the Bakara Market of Mogadishu, Somalia. The mission was to take less than 30 minutes, but the Somali Militia shot down two Black Hawk helicopters. The ensuing rescue of the downed flight crews extended the mission to over 18 hours. The film follows the build-up, assault and rescue of the event. The conflict ended with over 1,000 Somalis and 19 Americans losing their lives and one American being taken into captivity for 11 days.
