Written and directed by Richard Brooks, Bite the Bullet is a 1975 American Western film starring Gene Hackman, Candice Bergen, and James Coburn. Based on actual events, the film tells the story of a 700-mile cross-country horse race that took place in 1906. 9 different contestants competed to win, but each has their own reason for doing so. Two former Rough Riders (Hackman and Coburn), a Mexican with a toothache (Mario Arteaga), an Englishman (Ian Bannen), a reckless kid named Carbo (Jan-Michael Vincent), a lady of ill repute (Bergen), a cowhand struggling with his health (Ben Johnson), and a wealthy business man (Dabney Coleman) all being the race with expectations of winning, though many find that they cannot make it.
