Arthur is a comedy about Arthur Bach (Dudley Moore), a privileged playboy from New York who enjoys overindulging in alcohol, women and the finer things in life. Disappointed in his life choices, his family decides that he can only inherit his father's (Thomas Barbour) $750 million dollar fortune if he marries Susan Johnson (Jill Eikenberry), a reliable and responsible family friend. Arthur unhappily agrees to the plan because he cannot imagine his life without the fortune that he has grown accustomed to. He becomes even more conflicted when he meets Linda Marolla (Liza Minelli), a waitress from Queens who is addicted to shoplifting.
