Are You Being Served? is a British sitcom originally airing on the BBC network from 1972 to 1985 created by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft. The show centered around an ensemble cast of characters working in the fictional Grace Brothers department store in London. The characters were of different walks of life, yet all worked in the same store (albeit in different capacities). The show mostly focused on the characters Mr. Wilberforce Claybourne Humphries (John Inman), Captain Stephen Peacock (Frank Thornton), Mrs. Betty Slocombe (Mollie Sugden), and her assistant Miss Shirley Brahams (Wendy Richard). One defining characteristic of the show was the use of sexual innuendo. For example Mrs. Slocombe would often refer to her cat which she always referred to as her "pussy". More running jokes were the effeminate nature of Mr. Humprhies (Inman), and the occasional breaking of the fourth wall. The show often made light of the long-rooted class structure in England, usually undercutting the seriousness of those working in more well respected positions. Running for 12 years, Are You Being Served? is one of the most influential sitcoms in the history of England. It spawned a film, and a sequel series entitled Grace and Favour (or Are You Being Served? Again!).MORE[EDIT]
