Arabian Nights is a fantasy film miniseries developed by Hallmark for the ABC channel based on the epic tale One Thousand and One Nights that pulls its viewers into the madness of Sultan Shahryar (Dougray Scott), who in his paranoia believes all women want to kill him after a failed coup d'etat by his first wife and his brother, takes on a wife under the pressure of his counsel. Sultan Shahryar does not plan on living in wedded bliss but instead hopes to have his new wife, Scheherazade, executed the next day. Scheherezade (Mili Avital), the clever daughter of her new husband's advisor Ja'Far (Jim Carter), truly does love Shahryar and puts in motion a way to stall her execution and cure his madness by telling him a new tale, hoping the cliffhanger will keep her alive another night. She tells five interrelated stories, each with their own lessons and morals: Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, which follows the hunt of Ali Baba after he steals from the magical cave belonging to the murderous Forty Thieves; The Tale of the Poor Hunchback, in which an accidental choking leads to an entire neighborhood to continuously pass a body onto the next in order to not take the blame; Aladdin and the Magic Lamp, a classic tale of the thief Aladdin who uses genies of a ring and lamp to help make his wishes come true; The Sultan and the Beggar, in which a twisted Sultan's tale to trick a poor beggar backfires; and lastly, the Three Princes, where three brothers are sent to find the most precious thing in the world.
