Amistad is the 1997 historical slavery epic directed by master filmmaker Steven Spielberg (Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark) and based on the true story of bravery in the face of unspeakable hardship. A Spanish slave ship is captured off the coast of New England, carrying a group of slaves who, led by the stoic Cinque (Djimon Hounsou, Deep Rising, Gladiator), revolted against their captors and took over piloting of the ship, hoping to somehow return to their African homeland.
