American Wonders: National Parks of the West is a stunning documentary that showcases the many majestic natural landscapes of the American West. Many of American's natural treasures are presented in their best light, including the Grand Tetons of Yellowstone in Montana, Yosemite National Park and Big Sur in California, the Grand Canyon in Arizona, and many other sublime wonders of the natural world. The National Park system in the United States was spearheaded by Andrew Jackson when he set aside what is now Hot Springs, Arkansas as a natural site protected from development. The idea of "natura parks" rest on the idea of large areas of land owned by the U.S. government that are protected for their "natural beauty." They are restricted from development and reserved recreational usage for future generations. The first official national park was Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872 by the United States Since then, the International Union for Conservation of Nature was established to define national parks and relegate their protection. As of 2010, there are about 7,000 national parks worldwide.MORE[EDIT]
