American Pop is a 1981 animated film that chronicles the development of American music through the experiences of four generations of a Russian immigrant family. The film is split into four parts, with each section focusing on a different generation as well as a different style of music. The film opens with Zalmie, who moves to New York City as a child. Zalmie quickly develops an affection for ragtime and jazz bands. He barely makes a living doing various stage acts, despite his dreams of finding success as a singer. Zalmie's son, Benny, grows up in New York quiet and introverted. He practices the piano whenever he gets the chance and develops in immense talent for jazz piano in the popular style.
