American Crime

American Crime is a 2007 drama directed by Tommy O'Haver. It is based on a true story that happened in Indiana during the 1960s. When Lester (Nick Searcy) and Betty Likens (Romy Rosemont) decide to work in a traveling carnival, they leave their daughters, Sylvia (Ellen Page) and Jenny (Hayley McFarland), with an acquaintance named Gertrude Baniszewski (Catherine Keener). Since Gertrude is a single mother with six children, she needs the 20 dollars a week that the Likens couple promises her in return for taking care of the two teenagers. Unfortunately, the payments are late, which enrages unstable Gertrude and causes her to physically abuse Sylvia and Jenny. Gertrude soon concentrates her abuse solely on Sylvia after the girl reveals a shameful secret about Gertrude's oldest daughter, Paula (Ari Graynor). When the children in the neighborhood become involved in Sylvia's degradation and torture, the results will soon scandalize their small, close-knit community. MORE [EDIT]
