A Separate Peace is a complicated film about two friends whose relationship is changed dramatically after a monumental event. The nation is embroiled in the fighting of World War II, and Devon boarding school offers a place for young men hoping to avoid the draft, enrolling in summer school classes. Gene, (J Barton) is from a modest upbringing, and is rather shy and reserved, but a fine student. His best buddy Finny, (Toby Moore) a handsome, athletic, popular kid couldn't be more different, but they seem inseparable to everyone around them. One of the bonding moments between the two boys involves jumping from a large tree int the river below. Although reluctant at first, Gene makes the plunge, and the boys are constantly together from there on. However, as the film progresses, jealousy and resentment come between them, and on one particular occasion, seemingly without provocation, Gene deliberately shakes the branch, causing Finny to fall to the ground below, breaking his leg. The superstar athlete can then no longer particular in his beloved sports, and Gene wrestles with his own regret and guilt as well as the strain on their friendship. The school is turned upside down, and an investigation into the event turns even more tragic when Finny again falls down the stairs, shattering the bone he has previously broken. Peter Yates directs this adaptation of the classic novel by John Knowles, as much about young men in general as it is about Gene, a young man finding out what kind of person he truly is.MORE[EDIT]
