71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance

71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance is the third and final movie in Michael Haneke's Glaciation Triology which explores acts of violence and their devastating effects. The movie opens with a mass murder on Christmas when a 19-year-old student kills several other people and then himself for seemingly no reason. The film then flashes back to October 12 and moves toward the fateful night through fragmented clips. It covers exactly 71 different scenes, depicting snapshots of the lives and choices of different people the audience never learns the name of. Each fragment begins with a news clip of different news stories from the war in Sarejavo to recent news about Michael Jackson. Various characters reappear in other fragments, building up to the events of that Christmas Eve. The film is presented in a detached and objective manner without any exposition, giving the feeling that the nameless characters seen in the film could be anyone from day-to-day life. MORE [EDIT]
