42nd Street

42nd Street is a Great Depression era musical that explores the pressures of life in the theater. Broadway director Julian Marsh (Warner Baxter) is down on his luck. The stock market crash of 1929 robbed him of his fortune, his friends, and his health, and when producers Barry (Ned Sparks) and Jones (Robert McWade) offer him a chance to direct again, he's eager to take the job. Putting together their production of Pretty Lady, however, is no walk in the park for Julian. Despite his leading lady's intrigue with the play's financial backer, an inhospitable economic climate, and a cast of amateur actors, Julian thinks he can put on a good show. But just when things are looking up for Julian and the cast of Pretty Lady, a key cast member's injury threatens to bring the entire production to a halt.
