Are you having a Fourth of July party? I hope so. It’s a time to kick back, drink outside, and hang out with your friends — so why not toss in a film during, or after, the party? Freedom’s great and these films are all very America-y (or just classic summer movies you know and love).

Free Online

The Patriot – Yes, it’s strikingly similar to Braveheart. But it’s about America and freedom, so it’s very apropos for your 4th.

North & South – The Civil War isn’t necessarily about our fight to win liberty from Britain, but it is a very important fight for freedom and North & South is an amazing series.

Ghostbusters - Ghostbusters is, of course, a hilarious ol’ classic. Whip it out while you fondly remember summers of your childhood.

Bad Boys - What’s more American than cops, guns, and Will Smith?

Huckleberry Finn – Huck Finn, a boy full of rough-and-tumble adventures and of literary fame makes another leap from page to screen in this 1970s version of Twain’s classic novel. There’s nothing like a trip to the old South with a kid to remind you of trouble-making summer!

And Justice for All - A famous courtroom drama about (duh) JUSTICE. Al Pacino stars as a morally conflicted attorney taking on a difficult rape case.

Red Water - Maybe you don’t want to watch something heavy. Maybe you just want to laugh and laugh your 4th away at a film that just… couldn’t happen. Red Water is totally what you’re looking for.

The Spirit – Ok, we agree that this one’s a stretch. But it’s an action flick and it’s highly stylized, so why not project it against a wall outside while you enjoy your outdoor BBQ? You didn’t want to pay for it the theaters, and you don’t have to pay for it now!

Available on Netflix Instant Watch

Wet Hot American Summer – Camp! Who doesn’t remember camp? This wacky group of counselors at summer camp have a crazy summery time. And, it’s especially topical because there’s talk of a sequel.

Labyrinth – Nothing like David Bowie in ridiculously tight pants singing with muppets. ‘Nuff said.

Available to Buy or Rent for Online Streaming

Independence Day – Will Smith blows up aliens and saves America! Doesn’t get any more US-of-A than that. A true 4th of July classic.

The End of Indian Summer - If you’re in the mood for a little mystery set at the end of a summer… Hitchcock’s your guy. No blood & gore here, but earnest, thoughtful creepiness.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone – Really, all of the Harry Potter movies are perfect summer flicks. You know the plot, so you can kick back and just enjoy! Turn your brain off.

The Goonies – Some kids get into some capers! Perfect for a background flick while you party. Especially good if you dug Super 8 and want to experience one of the classics that inspired Abrams.

Enjoy your 4th, guys, and I hope you like these films!
